CHARISMATIC RENEWAL
CATHOLIC CHARISMATIC RENEWAL
Is a movement built on a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and the key doctrines of Christianity described in the New Testament. " No one can say Jesus is Lord unless he is under the influence of the Holy Spirit." (1 Corinthians. Ch 12: v3 ) To emphasise this proclamation in prayer and action, is the function of the Charismatic Renewal.
THE PURPOSE OF CCR
To bring people to a deeper personal relationship with Jesus Christ by accepting their own individual "Pentecost" ----by experiencing the Holy Spirit to be manifested in them by baptism in the Holy Spirit. Although the Holy Spirit is received through baptism and confirmation, Christians need to come through prayer to to a personal appreciation of the action and power of the Holy Spirit, in a life transforming experience in their every day lives. Charismatic Renewal became established within many Christian churches over the past fifty years. In the Catholic Church, it began in 1967 in USA, when a group of students had completed a 50 day Pentecost Novena to the Holy Spirit. Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR) is now active in more than 200 countries and is fully supported by Bishops of the Catholic Church.The international Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services (ICCRS) established by the Vatican in 1993 to serve world wide Catholic Charismatic Renewal, is basedin Rome. ICCRS serves as a liaison between all the CCR prayer groups and the Vatican.
WHAT DOES THE CHURCH SAY ABOUT IT ?
1962 Pope John XXlll when announcing the beginning of the second Vatican Council said "My soul is resting in the hope of a NEW PENTECOST, in which will be re-established the victory of truth". In 1973, Pope Paul Vl, gave his blessing to leaders of CCR prayer groups at their international leaders meeting in Rome, and said " If we really love the Church, the main thing we must do is to foster in it, an outpouring of the Divine Paraclete, "The Holy Spirit." In1992 Pope John Paul ll meeting with representatives of world wide CCR prayer groups following the second Vatican Council, said "The emergence of this renewal was a gift of the Holy Spirit to the church. One of the most important results of this spiritual awakening , has been that increased thirst for holiness, which is seen in the lives of individuals, and the whole church." In 2006 Pope Benedict XVl led the 40th anniversary celebrations of CCR at St Peter's for the vigil of Pentecost in 2006. The Holy Father gave CCR His Apostolic Blessing and stated His intention to continue to guide with " paternal affection" the ecclesial movements , associations and communities which were nurtured by Pope John Paul ll (among these is Catholic Charismatic Renewal) The Vatican recognised International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services (ICCRS) as a body for the promotion of Catholic Charismatic Renewal. The ICCRS office is situated in Palazzo San Calisto , Vatican. Michelle Moran (England) is the President of ICCRS council and Cyril John (India) is it's Vice President.
BENEFITS From reading the Acts of the Apostles and the writing of Bishops of the early Christian Church, it becomes evident that the action of the Holy Spirit was very important in the lives of Christians. Catholic Charismatic Renewal helps Christians to come to an experience of the Holy Spirit as a presence in their lives. Through the influence of the Holy Spirit people come into a personal relationship with Jesus as Saviour and Healer. Also a personal relationship is formed with God as loving Father and the Holy Spirit as guide and comforter. In a 4 night programme through a renewal of commitment to one's baptismal promises and after receiving brief teachings on personal relationship with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, people are prayed with for a deeper love of God the Father, and a release of the gifts of the Spirit. This is called a life in the Spirit programme.•(Offering Baptism in the Spirit) Catholic Renewal helps people to experience personal Christian Spiritual growth particularly in the areas of :- AWARENESS: Prayer, scripture and liturgy become more meaningful. TRANSFORMATION : " Through Him, with Him in Him" ( Eucharistic Prayer) becomes the motif of life as we "see Him more clearly, love Him more dearly, walk with Him more nearly, day by day." As St Paul wrote in ( Galatians Ch2 : v20 ) " And the life I live now is not my own ; Christ is living in me. I still live my human life, but it is a life of faith in the Son of God."
FRUITS OF CHARISMATIC RENEWAL
Galations 5: v 22 " The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control." Through Renewal a deep inner joy is experienced in peoples lives. Love and trust in God as Father develops. Emphasis is placed on the need for spiritual growth and service to others in building up the Church. Active involvement is encouraged in Parish life. Members of Catholic Charismatic Renewal attempt to live an authentic Christian life. The fruits of Renewal (Galatians 5:v22) should be evident in their lives.
PRAYER MEETINGS
Prayer meetings are purposeful gatherings held regularly for people who are interested in renewal of their Catholic Faith through an experience of God's love expressed through the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. Prayer meetings consist of spontaneous prayer, enthusiastic praise, worship with song, scripture reading, prophecy, teaching, sharing. witnessing to a fuller Christian life, fellowship, and prayer for specific needs of individuals. Intercessory prayer for the needs of the Church and those present is an important part of the prayer meeting. From New Testament writings we learn of the gifts of the Spirit. These gifts are given by God through the Holy Spirit for building the faith of the people and therefore building up the Church. Some gifts of the Spirit are : Word of wisdom, Word of knowledge, Faith, Healing, Miracles, Prophecy, and Discernment. Prayer tongues is a particular gift which helps individuals be strengthened in faith and their prayer life. Manifestation of the gifts of the Spirit is experienced at prayer meetings. There are many more gifts of the Holy Spirit mentioned in the writings of St Paul.

THE PROMISE OF GREATER WORKS
John 14 RSV
12. " Truly , Truly , I say to you , he who believes in me will also do the works that I do;
and greater works than these will he do , because I go to the Father.
