CHARISMATIC RENEWAL

IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

1. WHAT IS IT ?

It is a Spiritual Movement built on a personal relationship

with Jesus Christ, and the key doctrines of Christianity

described in the New Testament.

"No one can say Jesus is Lord, unless he is under the influence

of the Holy Spirit.  ( 1 Corinthians Ch 12 v 3 )

To emphasise this proclamation in prayer and action, is the

function of the Charismatic Renewal.

2. WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE ?

To bring people to a deeper personal relationship with Jesus Christ by

accepting their own individual “Pentecost”allowing the Holy Spirit to be

manifested in them. “We know that Jesus lives in us, by the spirit

He has given us " (1 John Ch.3 v.24)
Although the Holy Spirit is received through baptism and confirmation,

Christians need to come to a personal appreciation of the action and

power of the Holy Spirit in their every day lives.

3. WHEN DID IT START ?
The Charismatic Renewal became established within many

Christian churches over the past fifty years . In the Catholic Church, it began

in 1967 in U.S.A.,and is now active in more than 200 countries worldwide,

CCR is fullysupported by the  bishops of the Catholic Church .

                          .
4. WHAT DOES THE CHURCH SAY ABOUT IT?
Pope John XXIII said “ My soul is resting in the hope of a NEW PENTECOST ,

in which will be re-established the victory of truth". In 1973, Pope Paul VI ,

gave his blessing to the CCR leaders at their international leaders meeting in

Rome , and said "If we really love the Church , the main thing we must do is

to foster in it , an outpouring of the Divine  Paraclete- the Holy Spirit."

Pope John Paul II said to CCR leaders in Rome, in March 1992,"The

emergence of this renewal following the second Vatican Council , was a gift

of the Holy Spirit to the church….one of the most important results of this

spiritual awakening has been the increased thirst for holiness which is seen

in the lives of individuals ,and in the whole church". ICCRS ( International

Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services ) was established by the Vatican in

1993 to serve the worldwide Catholic Charismatic Renewal . Pope Benedict XVI

led the 40th anniversary celebrations of CCR at St Peter's for the vigil of

Pentecost in 2006 . A joyful hymn of praise and a truly Spirit filled celebration.

The Holy Father has given CCR His Apostolic Blessing and stated his intention

to continue to guide with "paternal affection" the ecclesial movements,

associations and communities which were nurtured by Pope John Paul II.

( among these is Catholic Charismatic Renewal )

5. IS IT FOR ALL ?
Yes !…. It is normal New Testament Christianity .

6. WHAT CAN IT DO FOR ME ?
It helps the individual to experience personal Christian Spiritual Growth,

particularly in the areas of: -
AWARENESS --- Prayer, scripture, liturgy and community become “alive”, with

new depths of understanding.
ACCEPTANCE---of the Holy Trinity as an experience, that is, loving Father,

brother Jesus our Redeemer, and “power” of the Holy Spirit.
TRANSFORMATION--- “Through Him, with Him, in Him “,(Eucharistic Prayer)

becomes the motif of our life as we “see Him more clearly, love Him more

dearly, walk with Him more nearly, day by day.”
As St.Paul wrote in ( Galatians Ch.2 v.20 ) “And the life I live now is not my

own; Christ is living in me. I still live my human life, but it is a life of

faith in the Son of God.”

7. WHAT ABOUT EMOTION ?
It is written in scripture---
“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,

faithfulness, gentleness , and self control". ( Galations Ch.5 v22 )
Through the renewal , this joy mentioned so many times in scripture becomes

a reality in one's life.“Shout joyfully to God, all you on earth, sing praise to

the glory of His name." (Psalm 66 .vs.1&2)      It is meaningful rather than

emotional to experience a joyous freedom in praise , prayer , and worship.

8. IS EMPHASIS PLACED ON THE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT ?

Emphasis is placed on the need for spiritual growth , service , and a life that can

be recognised as " Christian ".  The gifts of the Spirit are a natural outcome of

Christian life lived in the Spirit .

The gifts of the spirit ( Word of Wisdom, Word of Knowledge, Faith ,

Healing, Miracles, Prophecy, Discernment, Tongues, & Interpretation of Tongues.)

are a natural and expected manifestation of the working of the Holy Spirit who ---
Produces all these gifts , distributing them to each as he wills.”

( 1Corinthians Ch.12 Vs.8 to 11)

9. IS SPIRITUAL ELITISM ENCOURAGED ?
NO!…. On the contrary, all are encouraged to be servants, to “wash the feet of

others” and be active within their Parish . The need for outreach and service to

others is also stressed as a necessary part of spiritual growth : “So it is, with faith

that doesn't show itself by good works, is dead." ( James Ch.2 v.17)

10. WHAT ARE PRAYER MEETINGS ?
( 1Corinthians Ch.14 : Vs.26 to 33.)
These consist of spontaneous prayer , enthusiastic praise and worship in song

scripture reading , prophecy , teaching , sharing , witnessing to a fuller Christian

life ,fellowship (love one another) ,and intercessory prayers for specific needs of

individuals. Prayer meetings  are generally held each week.  People attending

may be predominantly Catholic, but everyone is most welcome .

11. HOW CAN I LEARN MORE ABOUT IT

*By attending CCR. BARDON OUTREACH ( for details see home page ).

It may be "different” at first , but most people come to enjoy the freedom

and spiritual growth that ensues . One of the key initiatives of the Brisbane

Archdiocesan Synod 2003 was:-"Parishes should provide Prayer Groups ,

where people can meet Christ in the living word of God ,and in other people".

Jesus said in Mark Ch.11 v.24 :
"Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it ,

and it will be yours .

SPIRITUALITY FOR LIFE

( Jesus is our model steward )

" Each one of you has received a special grace , so like good stewards responsible

for all these varied graces of God , put it at the service of others . " ( 1 Peter 4 v 10 )

" NEGLECT NOT THE GIFT THAT IS WITHIN THEE "

( 1 TIMOTHY 4 v14 )

( IF YOU DON'T USE IT YOU'LL LOSE IT )

MY CHILDREN ,

I CALL ON YOU TO OPEN YOUR HEARTS TO THE GIFTS GOD HAS

FOR YOU . DO NOT BE CLOSED , BUT WITH PRAYER AND

RENUNCIATION  SAY YES TO GOD  AND HE WILL GIVE TO YOU

IN ABUNDANCE . I AM WITH YOU AND LOVE YOU MY CHILDREN ,

WITH A TENDER LOVE . THANK YOU FOR RESPONDING TO MY CALL .

Stewardship calls us to embrace a radical vision for what it means

to be a disciple of JESUS EVERYDAY , not just on Sundays , but in

every area of our life-to see and experience life as a gift from God .

Stewardship challenges us to act differently in how we use these gifts

to benefit others and to serve the Kingdom . This vision speaks into

every aspect of our lives , inviting us to be thankful , generous and

accountable for what we have been given .
